The Canarian Government has spent €1.24 million on preserving Lanzarote’s heritage in 2023, it was announced yesterday.
Migdalia Machín, Canarian Minister of Science, Universities and Culture, said “One of the main goals of the regional government is to preserve our historical legacy and reinforce Canarian identity.”
€900,000 has been dedicated to the renovation of the Casa de Cultura Benito Pérez Armas in Yaiza, the impressive 18th century colonial building that has been converted into an arts centre.
A further €190,000 has been given to the archaeological dig at San Marcial de Rubicón on Papagayo beach, the site of the first European settlement on the Canaries. This project has unearthed some hugely important finds recently, including several skeletons from the 15th century.
Money has also been dedicated to the renovation of the Casa Torres (pictured) and the Castillo de Santa Barbára in Teguise; the restoration of the painting of St. Margaret in Guatiza church, and a photography book about Lanzarote’s pre-conquest architecture.
