The lights went down over a crowded Charco and the sombre introduction to Mozart’s Requiem Mass echoed across the calm water as Arrecife celebrated its first Candlelight Concert for seven years last night.
This time, musicians from the Lanzarote Classical Orchestra performed on a large raft in front of the Atlantida Cinema, on which video footage of the concert was projected.
Several hundred lanterns containing single candles lined the streets surrounding the Charco, and the effect was at its most enchanting once the concert had begun, as the usual lighting was switched off.
The restaurants lining the lagoon were busy, and if the sound of the musicians didn’t reach as far as many had hoped, the unique atmosphere more than made up for it.
