The theft of five camels and a shepherd from Yaiza’s famous nativity scene has been condemned by the local Councillor for Culture, Daniel Medina.

“It’s a prank in extremely bad taste,” he said, “Not just because of the loss, but because of the work the creators have put into the Belén”.

Medina stressed that the Belén had been displayed in Yaiza for 40 years, and replacing the figures would not be easy.

Medina also revealed that two other people had been stopped by the police while removing gravel from the nativity scene while it was being prepared. He promised that cameras would be installed shortly to deter further thefts.
