The theft of 350 kilogrammes of sea bass from the fish farms off the coast of Playa Quemada has had a happy ending for Arrecife’s homeless and needy.
On Tuesday evening a worker at the fish farm saw a boat leaving the underwater “cages” where the sea bass are reared, and heading for land where a 4X4 was parked. The Guardia Civil in Yaiza were alerted, tracked the vehicle to a house in Playa Blanca and discovered 350 kilos of stolen sea bass, along with an inflatable dinghy, an outboard motor and various nets.
Agents opened fish to discover that they had eaten the pellets that are used at the fish farms, and arrested three men aged between 26 and 35 years of age, two of whom had previous convictions for similar fish-related thefts.
The Guardia Civil contacted Sor Ana, who runs the Café y Calor drop-in centre for the homeless and needy in Arrecife, and delivered the fish to her on Friday night, providing a month’s worth of meals for the 50 people who eat at the centre on a daily basis.
