Just in case you’re not sure, here are the rules on the Canaries relating to mask use in cars.

Masks must be worn when driving apart from in the following cases:

  1. When driving alone
  2. With one or more passengers you live in the same house with. Passengers must carry ID that can prove their main address.
  3. If you have a respiratory condition, illness or any mental or behavioural condition that exempts mask use. A signed declaration from a doctor will be necessary to prove this.

Always keep a clean, fresh mask to hand even if you are driving alone or with family you live with. You’ll need it if you have to leave the car for any reason, and should wear it when talking to police officers who may stop the car.

It’s a good idea to keep a spare mask in the glove compartment for this reason. However, do not hang your mask from your rear view mirror. Spanish authorities have confirmed that this obstructs your field of vision and could also attract a fine.
