The Canarian Government and Spain’s Metereological Agency have both declared a state of red alert for high temperatures on Lanzarote for tomorrow, Wednesday 26th August.
Red is the colour of a ripe, cool, deliciously sweet Lanzarote watermelon; it is the shade of the Gazette editor’s skin after half an hour on the beach, and it is also the colour of the maximum alert level for weather conditions on the islands, only issued when temperatures reach the highest levels, that they pose a potential risk to everybody.
Temperatures are forecast to reach 37 degrees in the Canaries and 40 degrees in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura around midday tomorrow.
Citizens are advised to keep out of direct sunshine, avoid strenuous activity in the hottest hours of the day, drink plenty of water, eat fresh fruit and vegetables, wear light, loose clothing and use sun protection at all times. If you care for young children, elderly people or animals, ensure they are also kept cool, protected and hydrated.
