Yaiza Ayuntamiento has formally initiated the procedure to modernise the Avenida Marítima in Playa Blanca, submitting the first phase of its comprehensive project to coastal authorities for approval.
Yaiza Mayor, Óscar Noda, has confirmed that the Ayuntamiento submitted the initial plans to both the Canary Islands Coastal Authority and the Directorate General for Coasts and Maritime Space Management. The submission requests favourable reports from both bodies to allow the tender and execution of works to proceed. The budget for this first phase is set at 2.2 million euros.
This initial stage covers the section between the Embajador hotel and the Paseo LASAL. Yaiza Ayuntamiento has planned subsequent phases to extend the modernisation with a cohesive design towards the renovated Playa Blanca port, representing a total investment exceeding 5 million euros.
“The aim is to renovate all the pedestrian paving and public lighting, improve stone walls, railings and the public services network,” explained Noda. He added that plans include, “building a performance square to continue promoting culture and leisure activities in the area where the outdoor fitness equipment is currently located, and create two viewing points with shaded areas, among other actions.”
Councillor for Public Works, Ángel Lago, provided further detail on the infrastructure improvements. “The project also includes the replacement of the sewerage network, so we have also sent all the information to the Lanzarote Island Water Council and the Lanzarote Water Consortium, public entities from which we have also requested approval.”
A notable feature of the design is the proposed installation of high-strength concrete paving with a photocatalytic treatment. This technology not only reduces environmental impact but also facilitates cleaning, eliminates pollutants, and reduces odours in urban environments.
The renovation is designed to significantly improve the quality of life for residents and enhance the visitor experience. It aims to boost the local economy, facilitate cultural and recreational events, and transform the promenade into a more inclusive and sustainable space. The project follows a meeting held last November between Mayor Óscar Noda and the Director General of Coastal and Maritime Space Management of the Canary Islands, Antonio Manuel Acosta.
