Unión Sur Yaiza won their play-off quarter final against Las Palmas Atlético yesterday, setting up the possibility of a tempting semi-final derby match against Arrecife’s UD Lanzarote.
Taking a one-nil advantage into the second home leg at Yaiza’s Campo Municipal, Yaiza suffered a fright in the 49th minute when Las Palmas scored a penalty.
However, Las Palmas still needed to score another (there are no penalty shoot-outs in these ties, and the highest placed team qualifies in the case of a draw) but were finally eliminated by a late goal in extra time from Yaiza’s Moha.
The second quarterfinal will take place at 11.30 am today, as UD Lanzarote face Pandería Púlido de San Mateo at the Ciudad Deportiva in Arrecife. Lanzarote’s Rojillos will be relying on their boisterous home crowd to give them the advantage, having drawn the first game in Gran Canaria 1-1.
The winners of that game will face Yaiza in a two-leg semi-final which will offer the chance to play a mainland side for ultimate promotion to Spain’s Second Division.
