Yaiza Ayuntamiento has issued a ten-day deadline for electric scooters to be removed from the streets of Playa Blanca.

A council announcement directed at companies who rent the scooters requested the voluntary removal of all scooters within a period of ten days. If this is not done, the council will remove and impound them itself (as has occurred in other parts of Lanzarote).

The reason for the ultimatum is “the absence of qualifications necessary to carry out such activity” – probably a reference to the way scooter companies operate without a municipal business licence.

Yaiza Mayor Óscar Noda explained that the council was preparing new regulations to govern  personal mobility vehicles, and said  “We have had citizen’s complaints about the invasion of scooters into public spaces,  on sidewalks and pedestrian footpaths such as Calle Limones or the promenade, so until the by-laws come into effect we intend to guarantee the safety of pedestrians, and also requesting the collaboration of private owners who also may not circulate on pedestrian streets. The scooter is an alternative for mobility, but we cannot ignore the fact that it is a vehicle, and like any other vehicle it is obliged to obey road signs.” emphasizes.
