Yaiza Ayuntamiento and the Cabildo have cordoned off a 300-metre section of the beach at Janubio for protection of birds.
The restricted area stretches from the carpark to the “boat zone” on the beach (we’re not entirely sure where this is but assume it’s on the lagoon side of the beach), and access is forbidden to the public, with visits only allowed “outside of nesting season, and for educational purposes.”
Janubio is a nature reserve and a ZEPA (Special Bird Protection Zone) and has recently been in the news after birdwatchers spotted flamingos in the lagoon.
Yaiza has also reminded visitors that dogs are banned from the beach at Janubio.
