A woman was evacuated by rescue helicopter after suffering symptoms of heatstroke on the Camino de los Gracioseros yesterday afternoon.

The Camino is a steep zig-zagging rocky cliffside trail from the Mirador de Yé to the Playa del Risco with no shade. It is one of the toughest walks on the island and tackling it at midday on the hottest day of summer is probably one of the best ways to get heatstroke there is.

So it turned out, as the GES helicopter had to be called owing to the difficulty of the terrain. The victim, who had collapsed and was having difficulties breathing, was evacuated then taken to the health centre in Valterra for treatment.

The incident is one of two callouts due to heatstroke reported on Lanzarote yesterday, neither of which thankfully proved fatal.
