Rough seas claimed the lives of three people on Tenerife last Saturday, with fifteen more injured in various incidents.
The first incident occurred when six French tourists were dragged into the sea by a large wave at Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Local Police stated that they had ignored preventive barriers.
Shortly afterwards the body of a man was retrieved from the sea on the south of the island. Local sources claim the deceased was a local fisherman. This was followed by the discovery of another body of a man, found floating in the sea at Playa El Cabezo in the south.
At 3pm, ten people were washed into the sea by a huge wave that smashed over the breakwater on the pier at Puerto de la Cruz, in northern Tenerife. One woman, a Dutch tourist, died in the incident
Another five French tourists were dragged into the sea by a strong wave at Roque de las Bodega beach in the north-east of the island. All were reported to have suffered injuries
In La Palma, three swimmers were rescued after getting into difficulties off Playa Bajamar, near Santa Cruz. The three had been clinging to a buoy until they were picked up, and two women, of 84 and 61 years of age, were treated for exposure.
On Lanzarote, emergency services were called to Famara beach to aid a person who had got into difficulties. However, by the time they arrived the person had managed to leave the water.
The Canarian Government’s pre-alert for rough seas remains in place.
