Union Sur Yaiza made history yesterday, winning promotion to the Segunda División RFEF for the first time in their 40 -year history in a nail-biting play-off final against Portugalete in the Basque Country.

With 90 minutes gone it looked bleak for Yaiza, who were losing by one goal, and things quickly got worse when Facú was sent off. However, a 98th minute equaliser by Javi Melián forced extra time, during which Yaiza had several chances despite being a man down.

With the two-leg match ending 2-2 on aggregate, it went to penalties to decide the promotion winners, and the hero of the hour was Yaiza goalkeeper Nauzet Pérez, who saved two of Portugalete’s attempts.

Yaiza will now play their first season of football in Spain’s national leagues.
