With half of the season now complete, UD Lanzarote are in third spot, three points behind leaders UD Las Palmas B in the RFEF 3 (the Spanish football federation’s 5th tier). Ian lane reports.
Only the league winners will be guaranteed promotion, with four other teams battling it out to reach a play-off final against a team from the mainland in the same category.
Lanzarote´s final game before the Christmas break took place at a packed Tías stadium on a glorious winter’s day. The club had asked their fans to support the “No Child without a Toy this Christmas” campaign by donating a gift. The fans responded emphatically, and Irene from the charity La Vida es Zuani (Life is Beautiful) was gobsmacked by how generous UD Lanzarote fans had been, as her van was packed solid with toys and sanitary items.
The team also performed superbly, scoring two second-half goals in a 2-0 win and leaving them in fourth spot going into the long Christmas break.
The Rojillos’ (The Reds) first match of the New Year was in Tenerife against third-placed side CD Marino on the 11th January. Goals from all of Lanzarote´s four front players, including new signing Iván Hujo, gave the Rojillos a massive 2-4 win which also leapfrogged them above their opponents into third spot.
UD Lanzarote matches will remain at their temporary home in Tías at least until late March and possibly beyond whilst the reform in Ciudad Deportiva stadium in Arrecife continues at a slow pace.
If you wish to attend a home match just turn up on match day and pay on the gate at Tías stadium. More info on matches, prices and how to get there can be seen on the website and Facebook page (details below).
