Two men were taken to hospital for light injuries after the road accident near the airport yesterday morning.
The accident took place at around 8.30 and appears to have involved four separate collisions, with one car flipping over completely.
Drivers on the island’s busiest road suffered long delays and several cars were ordered to reverse until they were able to turn off onto the slip-road for the Playa Honda industrial zone.
A convoy of military vehicles, heading for training exercises from the barracks in Arrecife, pulled over and soldiers helped to redirect traffic and clean up the area.
The incident has once more raised serious questions about safety on this stretch of road, where all traffic heading for Puerto del Carmen must make its way into the left-hand overtaking lane.
