The Travesía Playas de Papagayo swim race is set to return for its fifteenth edition this Saturday, October 18th.
The official presentation, held at the Dreams Lanzarote Playa Dorada Hotel this week, brought together institutional representatives, collaborators, and swimmers to outline an event that promises to draw over 250 swimmers of ten nationalities.
Organised by the B15 Active Open Water Association, the crossing is a highlight of the island’s sports calendar.
A Swim for Everyone
The swim offers a range of distances to cater to all abilities, with routes starting from the iconic Papagayo beaches and finishing at Playa Dorada. Participants can choose from 7 km, 4 km, 1.2 km, and 800-metre individual races, as well as 3 x 200 metre relays and dedicated children’s and inclusive events.
Support for Sport and Tourism
Yaiza Ayuntamiento has reiterated its firm backing for the race. Councillor for Sports, Ángel Lago, affirmed that “we are firmly committed to the Travesía Playas de Papagayo, an event that has been establishing itself as a benchmark for years and which once again fills Playa Blanca with life.”
The event was praised by insular authorities for its commitment to accessibility. Juan Monzón, Sports Minister for the Lanzarote Cabildo, called the crossing “a real example of inclusion, both for its commitment to accessibility and for the involvement of athletes with reduced mobility.”
Sustainability In Mind
The event’s commitment to the environment is symbolised by its new medals and trophies, designed by local artist Yaiza Estévez from Yaizart. Crafted from eco-friendly bamboo, they have a second life as a mobile phone hanger.
The crossing is backed by the La Caixa Foundation. Enrique Sánchez, director of the Caixabank in Lanzarote, noted, “we couldn’t miss an event that combines volcanoes, the sea, and real inclusion. We are delighted to support an initiative that combines sport, sustainability, and social commitment.”
The Papagayo Dreams Lanzarote Playa Dorada Beach Crossing is sponsored by Yaiza Ayuntamiento, Turismo Lanzarote, the Island Sports Service, the Lanzarote and Chinijo Geopark, and the Canarian Government, with support from Dreams Lanzarote Playa Dorada Hotel, Líneas Romero, Puerto Deportivo Marina Rubicón, and Tripasión Eventos.
