Lanzarote’s Dr José Molina Orosa Hospital has been involved in 219 transplants since it was prepared for these procedures in 2008.
156 organs and 52 corneas, taken from a total of 52 donors, have been extracted for transplants at the hospital, although the operations usually take place at the principal provincial hospital, the Dr Negrín in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. .
96 kidneys and 44 livers have been involved in transplants in the last 15 years, along with six lungs, hearts and pancreases.
The procedures involve co-ordination between several departments: Emergencies, Intensive Care, Anesthesia, Clinical Analysis, Microbiology, Cardiology, Neurology, Urology, Ophthalmology, Radiology, Pathology, Neurophysiology and Surgery.
Doctors Priscila Carcelén and Tamara Cantera handle this co-ordination with the assistance of nurse Penélope Gómez.
