A court in Las Palmas has issued a landmark judgement stating that a pregnant woman has the right to choose between a natural childbirth or a caesarian section.
The judgment follows an incident in the maternity hospital of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2016 in which a woman bearing twins underwent a 17-hour labour during which one of her twins suffered irreversible brain damage.
The court considered that the woman had not been adequately informed of the options available to her, and described the incident as an act of “obstetric violence”.
The Canarian Health Service has been ordered to compensate the woman with a million Euros.
