Teguise councillor Ginés González has announced his departure from the far-right Vox party, which he has accused of “abandoning the Canaries.”

Last week, Vox withdrew from the governments of four Spanish regions in protest at a plan to relocate around 600 underaged migrants in centres throughout Spain, thus relieving pressure on the Canary Islands.

“I cannot continue in a party that requires its members to abandon their principles,” said González, who has been in charge of Local Police, Civil Protection and Traffic in Teguise since joining a pact with Coalición Canaria and the Partido Popular.  “Vox has not understood the situation we face in the Canaries,” he added.

González was one of four Vox councillors elected on Lanzarote in 2023 and is the only member of the party in the Canaries to hold a seat in a government position.
