A statue in honour of the beloved schoolteacher, José María Espino González, was unveiled in Mácher yesterday.

The statue was created by local artist Cinthia Machín in memory of the schoolteacher who taught a mixed school group of all ages in the 1960s. The tribute was arranged by ex-pupils such as Juan Antonio Cedres, the well-known ex-postman of Macher, and was already under way when Don José María died last summer.

Tías Mayor, José Juan Cruz is another of the master’s ex-pupils who attended the unveiling. Last year, the Mayor described how Don José María had given “a dozen local lads the opportunity to access secondary education.”

The statue is located at the site of the old schoolroom, where local children of all ages attended their early years in school.
