Lanzarote’s Cabildo has signed an agreement with the city council of Nazaré in Portugal, linking two of Europe’s best-known surfing locations.

The partnership is a result of Quemao Connect, a project by the Lanzarote Quemao Class event, and seeks to pool the experience and knowledge of two premier surfing destinations.

A meeting brought together the President of Lanzarote’s Cabildo and the Mayor of Nazaré, tourist councillors, the organisers of the Quemao Class event and surfers from both destinations.

La Santa’s El Quemao break is often called “the best tube in Europe”, while the immense waves at Nazaré make news headlines each winter.

Manuel Sequeira, Mayor of Nazaré, said “As European maritime communities, we have much to gain by deepening our ties, not only through what we are already doing, but also by strengthening business, cultural, scientific, sporting and even educational links”.

Last year’s Quemao Class event reached an international audience of 8 million, with organisers claiming that the competition is now Lanzarote’s most important sporting event.
