The Cabildo has begun to install measures that it hopes will discourage suicide attempts in the Las Nieves area.

The steep Famara cliffs near the Ermita de las Nieves have become a recognised “suicide spot” on Lanzarote, with a tragic incident every few months. To discourage such acts, the Emergency Consortium and the Cabildo’s Social Welfare Department have got together with a series of deterrents.

These include a row of boulders that will physically block vehicles from the cliff- edge, as well as posters that attempt to dissuade potential suicides and offer the telephone numbers of organisations that could help.

GAMAS, (the Mutual Aid Group for those Affected by Suicide) has also offered its help.
