At the Casa de la Cultura in Yaiza, local students have presented photographs of their eating habits after attending workshops with photographer Gerson Díaz. The photos were put on display for visitors to see.
Díaz, accompanied by Yaiza’s Culture councillor, Daniel Medina, and Adonay Bermúdez, director of the Lanzarote Art Biennial initiative, explained to visitors at the opening of the exhibition that “the students took pictures with their mobile phones of everything they ate during a week and then we made a selection trying to choose a representative sample of their habits”.
Students between the ages of 13 to 17 from CEO Playa Blanca, IES Playa Honda, IES San Bartolomé and CEO Ignacio Aldecoa from La Graciosa all took part.
Bermúdez stated that “art has an important social component and we wanted the students to participate by showing what they usually eat – because food responds to social and cultural influences.”
The exhibition does not attempt to highlight whether there are healthier habits, but rather it is used as a way of reflection on young people’s diets.
