Lanzarote’s Partido Popular (PP) has issued an open letter to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez claiming that he is “not welcome” to holiday on Lanzarote.

The PP’s leader on Lanzarote, Astrid Pérez, issued a statement saying Sánchez was “neither welcome nor worthy” of spending his holidays in Costa Teguise, as he usually does. “Nobody likes him, and they don’t even defend him in his own party. We don’t like him here either; he’s useless,” added Pérez.

Sánchez’s party is currently embroiled in a corruption scandal, with two former secretaries of the Socialist party under investigation for receiving commissions in exchange for public contracts.  Sánchez’s wife is also under investigation for business irregularities while his brother is accused of influence peddling.

Sánchez took power in 2018 after a successful no-confidence vote against the PP, which was itself involved in a huge corruption scandal.

It’s also been a tough week for Sánchez elsewhere, as Donald Trump said “There’s a problem with Spain” at this week’s NATO summit. Spain is one of the few countries that has refused to fall into line with Trump’s demand that NATO’s European members pledge a minimum of 5% of GDP on defence spending.
