Socialist members of Lanzarote’s Cabildo have proposed a formal request for the Canarian Government to purchase Calle Santa Cruz de Marcenado 9 in central Madrid, where a 1954 mural by César Manrique is in danger of disappearing.
The mural was commissioned by a construction company and depicts building scenes in black, brown and white ceramic tiles. A small part of the mural is located on the exterior of the building and is still visible to passers-by more than 70 years later.
Councillor Alberto Aguiar said “The legacy of César Manrique is a treasure that we must conserve and protect. This mural forms part of our cultural history and has an enormous symbolic value.”
Aguiar believes that the Canarian Government should take advantage of the fact that the building upon which the mural is situated is on sale for a reported €500,000.
Most of Manrique’s work in Madrid, including murals on his home in C/Covarrubias and works on Spain’s first shopping centre, La Vaguada, has long disappeared.
