Three men, three women and a four-year-old child are missing, presumed dead, after their inflatable vessel sank 78 kilometres east of Lanzarote.

The Morroccan fishing boat Maranda was first at the scene and rescued 41 people, and the Lanzarote Coastguard ship Polimnia later recovered 2 more people. However, survivors reported that seven more people – three men, three women and a child – were missing.

The incident was the first of four rescues by Maritime Rescue services, which intercepted four boats containing 171 people. The Canarian route is usually busier in the autumn months because of calm weather conditions.
