Lanzarote has been awarded six Blue Flags for its beaches, and one for a sporting marina.

Puerto Calero won a Blue Flag as a sporting marina once again, and the recognition of excellence was also repeated by Playa Matagorda, Playa de los Pocillos and Playa Chica in
Puerto del Carmen; the Playa Blanca town beach, Playa Reducto in Arrecife and  Playa las Cucharas in Costa Teguise.

However, Puerto del Carmen’s Playa Grande lost its Blue Flag for the first time in several years, causing opposition councillors to accuse Mayor José Juan Cruz of “neglect”.

The reasons why the main beach of the island’s biggest resort did not win the award this year have not yet been revealed, although a report will be expected shortly.  Blue Flags are only awarded to beaches that meet the highest standards of cleanliness, water quality, disabled access, lifesaver services and public conveniences, among several other factors.
