Seabed collapse at Playa Chica

An underwater sinkhole appeared at Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen yesterday, forcing emergency services to close off the pier.

The 15-metre sinkhole which opened up near the pier is believed to have been caused by the collapse of a jameo – a volcanic tunnel. It was reported on Sunday afternoon by a group of divers in the area. 

At first, emergency service were concerned that a diver may have been affected by the collapse. However, after an exhaustive search it was established that there were no human victims.
