The low-cost airline has announced plans to increase its free cabin bag size by 20% following a European Commission initiative.

Currently, Ryanair allows passengers to take a carry-on bag measuring 40 x 25 x 20cm at no extra charge. However, that is about to change.

Ryanair states that the change will come into force in the coming weeks, with the new limit being 40cm x 30cm x 20cm (it should also weigh less than 10kg and fit under the seat in front of you.)

The change comes in response to a European Commission initiative, encouraging European airlines to agree on a standardised minimum free bag size. The rule applies to airlines based in the EU; however, airlines are allowed to accept larger sizes if they wish to.

Other airlines such as EasyJet have a higher maximum limit 45cm x 36cm x 20cm, Wizz Air allows for a maximum of 40cm x 30cm x 20cm, and BA a slightly smaller limit of 40cm x 30cm x 15cm for under-seat bags.

If you’ve ever passed through an airport, you will know that different minimum sizes cause problems for passengers, who often find themselves facing unexpected extra fees when their bags don’t meet the specified dimensions.

If unsure, always check with your respective airline directly.
