A right-wing group yesterday left several umbrellas on Playa Bastian in Costa Teguise as a protest against Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
The Hazte Oìr (Make Yourself Heard) group decorated the beach with dozens of specially printed umbrellas with photos of Sánchez and the word “Corrupt” printed on them in the typeface used for the film “The Godfather”. Playa Bastían is almost a kilometre east of the residence at La Mareta where the Sánchez family are spending their summer holidays.
The stunt is part of fierce national campaign by Sánchez’s opponents to force new elections, after close associates of his were placed under investigation for corruption charges. Sánchez’s wife, Begoña Goméz, was recently charged with misuse of public funds.
Hazte Oír is an ultra-right wing catholic pressure group that has previously campaigned against same-sex marriage, abortion and LGBT+ rights.
Lanzarote’s Socialists described the umbrella stunt as part of a “hate campaign that does not represent Lanzarote or the Canaries …an organised noise by the far right and their media supporters to poison political life.”
