Just a reminder that this Friday, 15th August, is a public holiday in Spain.
The Assumption of the Virgin is a catholic festival that celebrates the ascension of Mary’s body and soul into heaven and will be marked by masses throughout the island.
However, the day has also been linked with other midsummer festivals celebrating wine, and Lanzarote is no exception. On the morning of the 15th, workers in traditional dress will take camels into the vineyards near Bodegas la Geria to collect grapes.
These will then be unloaded at the bodega, weighed and dumped into a large stone vat, where visitors will be invited to tread the grapes with their bare feet.
The feast day of the Virgin de la Caridad will then be celebrated at the pretty little church next to the bodega.
