Arrecife Ayuntamiento will re-open the capital’s old market place, the Recova, as a farmer’s market and food court.

The Recova is a semi-enclosed area behind the main Ayuntamiento offices, which was the capital’s main market from the end of the 19th century, when producers would come from all over the island to sell their wares there. It closed down at the end of the 90s, and efforts to relaunch it since have not lasted for long.

Nevertheless, it remains an attractive corner of the capital, with four impressive Indian laurel fig trees providing shade, and a pretty central staircase

The council plans that the new Recova will be a farmer’s market where local producers can sell fresh groceries, while other stalls can offer food and snacks. A wine zone is also planned.

The development is part of a wider plan to renew central Arrecife along a more tourist-oriented model, taking advantage of cruise passengers and recent trends for more independent travel.
