WHERE IS LIDL?
Hi Gazette,
I was wondering if you could provide your readers with an update on Lidl. I read on your website today that HiperDino has opened yet another supermarket in Playa Blanca… ridiculous! We have more HiperDinos than we could ever need.
Last year you reported that Lidl would be open by December 2023. It didn’t open then, and progress on the supermarket has hardly changed. Is someone putting a stop to it perhaps?
Simon B.
Ed: I’m afraid we don’t know what’s keeping Lidl, but we think it’s unlikely anyone is deliberately hindering it. Supermarket provision relies on each company’s expansion plans and their viability studies. Applications are generally received positively by local councils, but they don’t make the proposals.
CRUISE SHIP DOCK
Dear Editor,
Are they building a dock or a jetty at Arrecife? I know it’s not complete, but it looks very small for a dock and not very long, maybe someone can explain the end result. Thanks,
Alan Peel
Ed: The Puerto Naos dock is intended for smaller cruisers than the giant ships that moor at Puerto Los Marmoles. The project involves a 150-metre structure with a ro-ro ramp. The structure you mention may be an esplanade intended to protect the dock from SSW weather conditions, which sometimes complicate mooring.
CLEAN UP AT CALETÓN BLANCO
Dear Editor,
I wrote to you in February this year about visitors using the beautiful Caleton Blanco as a ‘baño’ and not having seen the cleaning crews. Well today they were there! And cleaned a lot of mess from the beach. Yippee!

FOOTBALL FOCUS
Dear Gazette,
In Lanzarote we have three football teams in RFEF 3: UD Lanzarote, US Yaiza and CF San Bartolomé.
However, in Gazette’s pages of sport nothing is reported about the latter two. As I write, Yaiza are in second spot, two points ahead of Lanzarote and San Bartolomé are bravely fighting.
Reports about the three teams would be welcome.
Luis Ortíz Garcia
Ed: We’d welcome reports on either team, Luis, especially if they were as excellent as the ones Ian Lane has been reliably sending us for years. The same goes for other sports – just get in touch.
BIG HEAD
Dear Editor,
I was annoyed by your article about the self-styled artist who is so big-headed she that she thinks she has the right to deface the old cottage, which is the simplest form of habitation. I’m glad there was an outcry and that her work was removed. As if the natural beauty all around is not inspiring enough.
Thanks for your tribute to Jonnie Irwin. I always enjoyed him on TV. He was never stuffy and so very young.
