AEMET has extended yellow warnings for rain and storms on Lanzarote until 5 pm today (Sunday 14th December) as much of the island awoke to more rainfall.
The wet Sunday follows a Saturday when Storm Emilia gave Lanzarote a thorough soaking, causing floods, and some road closures. The weather was predicted to improve on Sunday, but although the wind has dropped, many parts of the island awoke to rain or drizzle on Sunday morning.
On Saturday, Yaiza, Uga, San Bartolomé and Tías received the most rain, with over 60 mms recorded at Yaiza’s football pitch. Arrecife, Playa Honda and Costa Teguise registered the lowest amounts.
Barrancos turned into rushing rivers, winds of up to 70 kph buffeted higher-lying parts of the island and lightning, thunder and hailstones were observed in many parts of the island. Emergency services were called out to over 50 incidents, although none were particularly serious. Some ferry crossings were cancelled but flights to and from Lanzarote’s airport operated with relative normality.
Events scheduled for today, such as Teguise’s Sunday market and the Christmas markets in Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen this evening, are still going ahead, although you’d be wise to take a jumper and maybe an umbrella. Arrecife’s Navilan Christmas Fair, whose site was heavily flooded, will now open officially on Monday evening.
