The Las Palmas Port Authority has rejected plans to build a petrol station at Puerto Naos in Arrecife following a negative report by Spain’s Interior Ministry.

The ministry judged that the proposed petrol station was too close to the National Police Commission, raising security concerns. A subsequent meeting of the Port Authority committee rejected the application of Lanzafuel S.A. to build a petrol station in the area.

The proposal had caused widespread criticism, from locals who pointed out that there were already several petrol stations in the immediate are, as well as those who had hoped for an educational establishment to be located in the site.

That hope now seems more likely, as the Canarian Parliament has approved the teaching of degrees in Nautical Studies on Lanzarote, and Arrecife’s Ayuntamiento hopes to develop the site as an adjunct to the nearby Fishing School.
