The Mayor of Tías has travelled to Madrid to represent Puerto del Carmen at the International Tourism Fair, where he will underscore the destination’s landmark 60th anniversary and its ongoing strategic tourism management.
Mayor Cruz Saavedra first expressed, on behalf of the municipality, his deepest condolences for the tragic train accident in Adamuz, Córdoba. He extended support to the families and friends of the victims and noted that the Exceltur Leadership Forum, which he was due to attend today, has been cancelled as a mark of respect.
As Fitur begins today, 21 January, the focus for the Tías Ayuntamiento’s Tourism Department will be on highlighting decades of dedicated tourism planning.
“Our presence at Fitur is crucial,” stated Mayor Cruz Saavedra. “It allows us to highlight the celebration of Puerto del Carmen’s 60th anniversary as a leading destination and the intense work of tourism management and coordination we undertake year-round.”
This coordination is bolstered by strong collaboration with the Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands (AMTC). As an active member, Puerto del Carmen works jointly with the AMTC to align strategies and contribute to wider decision making that impacts the region’s tourism sector.
A key part of this collaborative strategy is Puerto del Carmen’s involvement in the ‘Soy Canary Green’ project. Spearheaded by the AMTC since 2022, this initiative unites 14 Canary Island destinations in a concerted move towards a more “sustainable and conscious tourism model.”
The destination’s 60th anniversary celebrations will be a prominent talking point at the fair. Plans include established favourites like the annual St. Patrick’s Festival in Plaza del Varadero, which draws thousands, alongside special occasions such as a Tourism Gala and the ‘ZEConsciente’ awards, a programme focused on environmental protection and local identity.
