The Old Town of Puerto del Carmen is set to be awash with green as it prepares to celebrate this year’s St. Patrick’s Festival. Taking place from March 15th to 17th.
The official programme for the festival was unveiled yesterday morning. The presentation was led by the mayor of Tías, José Juan Cruz, alongside the CEO of the Lanzarote Tourism Promotion Society (SPEL), Héctor Fernández; the director of Social Responsibility at the Tourist Centres (CACT), Elizabeth Cedrés; and Yurena Martín, representing Kalma Events and Productions.
Speakers at the event underscored the historic ties between Ireland and Lanzarote, particularly in the Old Town. The mayor spoke warmly of this connection, stating, “It rivals the streets of Dublin, with which we feel a great affinity.”
Delving deeper into the relationship, José Juan Cruz remarked: “Beyond the figures, of the more than 385,000 tourists from Ireland who visited Lanzarote in 2025, what is truly important are the people. It is the 900 Irish residents who have decided to make Lanzarote their home. It is the entrepreneurs who have invested in Puerto del Carmen. It is the visitors who return every year because they feel that there is something special here.”
Speaking on behalf of the island’s tourism body, Héctor Fernández expressed appreciation for the enduring bond between the Irish people and Lanzarote. “We would like to express our gratitude to the Irish people for the loyalty and affection they have always shown towards our destination,” he said. “It is an honour for us to be able to share and recreate such a significant celebration as St. Patrick’s Day on the island, bringing its traditions and culture closer to those who are with us today. It is our way of reciprocating this historic relationship and making them feel at home in Lanzarote on such a special day.”
Elizabeth Cedrés from CACT encouraged the local population to join in the festivities, describing it as a celebration for everyone. “A very special celebration for a community that has found in our beaches, landscapes, and climate the ideal place to enjoy their winter holidays,” she said. She invited everyone to “let themselves be swept up in the festive atmosphere of these days in honour of the patron saint of Ireland, and to share in the green, the music, and the joy of a much-loved community closely linked to the tourist history of Puerto del Carmen and Lanzarote.”
Yurena Martín of Kalma Eventos y Producciones provided a detailed breakdown of the schedule, highlighting key changes for this edition. Notably, the sporting activities will on Los Pocillos beach on Saturday, March 15th. The day will feature a unique joint exhibition of hurling and Canarian wrestling, followed by a charity walk dedicated to raising awareness about mental health and suicide prevention.
As the weekend progresses, the focus will shift to the Plaza de El Varadero in the historic heart of the Old Town. On March 16th and 17th, this square will become the epicentre of the celebration, hosting a vibrant mix of musical performances, live concerts, and a diverse offering of Canarian and international cuisine, alongside various cultural activities.
The main day of celebration, Tuesday, March 17th, will begin with a traditional mass at the church of La Tiñosa in the morning, a particularly significant event for the local Irish community. The flag will then be raised in Plaza de El Varadero. In the afternoon, the much-anticipated grand St. Patrick’s Day parade will wind its way along part of Avenida de las Playas, culminating at El Varadero. The procession promises to fill the air with the sounds of music and bagpipes, accompanied by dancing, waving flags, and a sea of green, ensuring a truly festive atmosphere for all.
