Arrecife Ayuntamiento has announced plans to renovate its old fish market – a glass-fronted building on the seafront that has long been disused.
The ground floor will be used for the sale of freshly-caught fish, while a lift will be installed to the first floor, where people can taste local products.
The plans are part of a project for a “culinary route”, which will also include a re-opening of La Recova, the open-air market zone in the attractive courtyard to the rear of the Ayuntamiento building. Now rarely used, this was once the most important market on Lanzarote, where vendors from all over the island would travel to sell their products.
The heyday of La Recova was captured by German Karl Heiz Kramberg in a fascinating video that forms part of the Memoria Digital de Lanzarote archive.
