Celebrations for the Virgen del Carmen in Puerto del Carmen’s old town will be closely monitored by police, who will search party-goers for drugs and weapons.
Open-air concerts are scheduled for tonight, tomorrow evening (6th) and the 12th and 13th next weekend.
Mayor José Juan Cruz said that police and Guardia Civil officers will frisk people “like they do at the airport”, and access to the Plaza del Varadero will be limited to two entrances.
“Any item thats incompatible with the fiesta will be confiscated and taken to the dump, just so everyone knows,” said Cruz.
“This is going to be a massive event, far bigger than the last one in 2019. In addition to locals, the resort is packed with tourists,” added Cruz. He explained that pedestrians will have priority during the celebrations, and several roads will be closed or made one-way. “I advise everyone who wants to come to do so on foot, by busa or by taxi,” he concluded.
On the days in question, carnival concerts will take place in the Plaza Varadero from 10.30 or 11 pm, with performances by well-known fiesta bands such as Rikabanda, Banda Nueva and Los Conojeros.
The main event during the fiestas is the Martime Procession, when the image of the Virgin is paraded on small boats in and around the harbour. This unforgettable event will take place on Saturday 13th August at 6pm.
