San Bartolomé has been forced to suspend the San Juan celebrations that take place on Playa Honda’s Guacimeta beach because of the presence of Kentish plover nests.

San Juan is Spain’s bonfire night, a midsummer celebration that takes place throughout Spain on the evening of 23rd June, with large gatherings and bonfire parties.

However, reports of nesting Kentish plovers – a small bird that is often seen scurrying along the tideline – have forced the annual event at Playa Honda’s largest beach to be cancelled.

Mayor Isidro Pérez pointed out that the bonfire space had not been extended, but the number of plovers had increased.  “I’m happy that the plovers are recovering, and I assure locals that we’re looking for somewhere else to hold the celebrations. We have to live together.”
