Arrecife Ayuntamiento is spending half a million Euros on improvements to Playa de Las Arenas.

The beach, which lies between the rocky headland on which the Castillo de San José stands and the cargo port of Puerto de los Marmoles, will be equipped with showers and foot-washing facilities, lighting and green spaces watered by an irrigation system. The footpath that links the cargo port with Arrecife will also be renovated.

Although Playa de las Arenas is little-known to tourists, it is popular with residents of Arrecife. It is also the only location on Lanzarote’s south coast where lava from the eruptions of the 1730s reached the sea.

Mayor Yonathan de León said the aim of the project was to “continue ensuring that the beach is a place for locals to meet up, walk and enjoy themselves. It’s the favourite beach of many families in the nearby barrios and with new services it will offer more benefit to the public.”
