The Canarian Government yesterday approved improvements to the sewage treatment plant at Playa Blanca for a cost of €10 million, with work taking place over 20 months and scheduled to end in 2026.
Manuel Miranda, the Canarian Territorial Policy and Water Minister, said “The government has decided to tackle this issue, which is fundamental to solve the problems the plant is currently facing.”
The current plant was built in 2003, but the increase in residents and tourists in the resort has meant that it is increasingly incapable of handling the situation in the south of the island.
Residents’ associations have already complained about constant bad smells issuing from the plant, which they claim are not just damaging their quality of life, but also constitute a health hazard.
