Between 100 and 110 migrants arrived on three separate boats yesterday. All were sighted well offshore of Lanzarote and escorted into Arrecife by sea rescue services.
The first boat contained forty people, described as ‘Magrebis’ (Moroccan or Saharan) in a wooden cayuco (fishing boat). The second vessel detected was an inflatable containing 28 “sub-Saharans” (from countries lying south of the Sahara). The third vessel was another cayuco, about which little information has yet been released.
Meanwhile, in Morocco, authorities arrested 34 people who were preparing to board a boat to the Canaries on Sunday. The arrests were made south of Tarfaya, and among the arrested was a 26-year-old man described as “involved in illegal emigration and trafficking.”
