Unions have warned that without a last-minute agreement on salaries, the scheduled Easter week strike by Canarian hotel workers is “inevitable”.
After the break-down of an urgent meeting between unions and employers’ associations on Friday, representatives of the CCOO and UGYT unions called once again for a 7.75% wage rise to reflect the growth in the booming tourism sector.
Inocencio González of UGT said “With a massive influx of visitors like the one we are experiencing the workloads are brutal,” and demanded more investment in occupational health and safety.
The employers’ unions, for their part, have stated that wages have risen above the inflation rate and are better than in many other parts of Spain.
