The Cabildo has opened a new Inclusion and Social Welfare Centre in Puerto del Carmen.

Located on the site of the old Colegio Daos in Matagorda, the centre was opened on Monday with the attendance of Cabildo president Oswaldo Betancort, the Canarian Social Welfare Councillor Candelaria Delgado and several representatives of charities and ONGs on Lanzarote.

The Island Space for Inclusion and Social Welfare of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has 15 classrooms, of which 6 will be approved for training; an industrial kitchen and dining room for 45 people; a multipurpose room with capacity for 60 people, a reception, meeting room and two offices for individual attention, as well as several other rooms.

There are also football and basketball courts, and accommodation for up to 30 people. The centre’s location in Puerto del Carmen was highlighted as an advantage owing to the public transport links and combining social action with tourism as part of Lanzarote’s identity.

The centre is described as “A place for meeting, training and collaboration aimed at promoting inclusion in the areas of disability, dependency, old age, mental health and the fight against poverty.” Local charities will be given the chance to name the centre in the near future.
