Every motorist on Lanzarote must carry certain items in their vehicle by law. One of those things, a v16 emergency light that is placed on the roof of the car in case of emergency, will be compulsory in a few months. Here’s the full list, and some other items that are highly recommended.
Documents: You need to carry three: a driving licence, registration certificate (permiso de circulación) and technical inspection (ITV) document.
Spare tyre or puncture repair kit: Some means of changing or repairing a tyre is required. Ensure any spare tyre is kept inflated. You must also have a jack and a wrench.
Reflective jacket: As it is dangerous to leave a car in an emergency at night without a reflective jacket, this must be kept in the cabin of the vehicle, not in the boot.
Emergency light: A battery-operated V16 emergency light, connected to the Traffic Dept by GPS, will be compulsory from the beginning of next year and must be kept in the cabin of the vehicle, where it can be quickly placed on the roof. On 2nd January 2026 they will replace the current emergency triangles, but until that date the triangles must still be used, although the light is also recommended by the DGT.
RECOMMENDED
On Lanzarote you won’t ever need tire chains or anti-freeze; the island’s too small to make a map much use and while you might want snacks in your car, you’re unlikely ever to need them.
• Spare glasses or contact lenses: It’s not obligatory to carry a spare set of glasses or contacts, but if your usual pair is lost or damaged it can not only be useful – it could also avoid a €200 fine if you do drive without them.
• First Aid kit: for minor accidents.
• Windscreen sunshades: To keep the interior of your car as cool as possible.
• Water: For drinking and for topping up windscreen deposit, washing down dusty windows etc,
• Tools, duct tape, scissors: To make minor repairs.
• Wet wipes/tissues/rag: To clean the car.
• Torch.
• Jump leads.
• Empty petrol canister.
