In a week when demonstrations against mass tourism have been announced on five islands, Lanzarote’s Cabildo has approved the construction of a 624-place hotel in Playa Blanca.
The five-star hotel will be located in the vicinity of the recently opened Barcelo, the largest hotel on the island, and will be built by Explotaciones e Inversiones Timanfaya.
The Cabildo’s approval gives the promoters the chance to apply for a building licence from Yaiza Ayuntamiento.
Yaiza has already ruled that the hotel conforms with its 2014 Supplementary General Plan, although that piece of legislation is awaiting appeal with the Spanish Supreme Court after being annulled by the Canarian High Court.
