A yellow wind alert for Lanzarote will come into effect from 8 pm tonight (Monday 2nd March), with possible north-westerly gusts of up to 70 kph.

It will be lifted at 3 am on Tuesday morning, but another yellow wind alert will come into effect at 3 pm on Tuesday, with similar conditions forecast.

A yellow alert for rough seas has also been issued from 12 midday on Tuesday until 3 pm on Wednesday. As usual this winter, the heavy swells will affect north and north-easter-facing coasts of the island.

A recently-released satellite photo (shown above) shows how the last week’s shift from south-westerly winds to north winds created a “return Calima”, bringing airborne dust to the island from the north. The phenomenon is rare, as calimas usually come from the east or south-east.
