The Cabildo has announced that César Manrique’s “Fertility” statue, better known as the Monumento del Campesino, will be renovated at a cost of €80,000.

The works will be carried out by Pavimiquia SL, and will take around four months, during which time access to the statue will be restricted.

One of Manrique’s largest artworks, The Monumento del Campesino was created in 1969 on a rocky outcrop called the Peña de Tajaste in the very heart of Lanzarote, as a tribute to the farmers who work in the wine fields to its west and the sandy jable region to its east.

It is an early example of recycling, made of the water tanks taken from various boats and painted brilliant white.

Tourist councillor Ángel Vásquez praised the “quality and sensitivity” of renovation works that would “guarantee the renewal of a sculpture that has become a Lanzarote icon.”
