Yaiza Ayuntamiento observed a minute of silence yesterday in memory of the baby who died in Monday’s horrific accident in Playa Blanca.

Mayor Óscar Noda thanked citizens for joining “a gesture of respect in response to a tremendously painful event for the victims, who are British and Swedish victims. Our solidarity and respect goes to each one, their families and relatives, and we hope for positive news of their recovery.”

Noda also extended condolences to the 1,600 British residents of Playa Blanca.

Meanwhile, the court appearance of the driver that was scheduled for midday yesterday has been postponed until the progress of the surviving victims is clearer.

The driver was a British woman resident in Playa Blanca, who was driving above the speed limit under the influence of alcohol and drugs.  Canarias7 has reported that two previous fatal collisions caused by drunk drivers in 2016 and 2018 resulted in prison sentences of around three years.

The grandparents of the baby arrived on Lanzarote yesterday and have been offered full support by the Cabildo via the British Consul.
